A veteran aviation educator and pilot, J. Clinton Grant is currently Tarrant County College’s dean of aviation, business, and logistics. TWU said the top goal of its aviation program—which snagged a $15 million grant in May—is to produce more women commercial pilots.

Electrical Engineering Professor Yan Wan has received $800,000 in National Science Foundation funding to develop an open-networked airborne computing platform for drones used by first responders. Networking a system of "robots in the air" can help find disaster victims, guide rescuers, and more. Her work could also be used for drone delivery and other commercial applications, UTA says.

UNT Names New Executive Dean of University’s Largest College

The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences is UNT’s largest college with more than 8,000 students. New Executive Dean Albert Bimper will oversee more than 22 academic departments and programs, including anthropology, geography and the environment, media arts and political science.

UNT and Dallas-based communications tech company COMSovereign are partnering to develop and launch a new 5G edge-centric infrastructure test platform, funded in part by a grant from the North Central Texas Council of Governments. With the new program, UNT's Dr. Kamesh Namuduri says his team will "be able to expand our focus on wireless connectivity and research into Advanced Air Mobility technologies including UAVs, where UNT is already actively engaged with an expanding network of industry and government partners."

The grant award supports a new online platform to find out why cyber jobs are going unfilled—and make it easy for employers to find talent through an online database. UNT's Ram Dantu and Mark Thompson are principal investigators on the project. Dantu says foreign governments are "spying on us all the time,” and threats like ransomware attacks and cyber attacks abound.
"We need a large workforce to combat this, and we don’t have the workforce,” Dantu says.

The funding from the National Institutes of Health will help UNT HSC at Fort Worth advance its ongoing research on how Alzheimer's disease affects different racial and ethnic groups. Sid O'Bryant, executive director of UNT HSC's Institute for Translational Research, said there's never been a large-scale study like this before.
“This award and project are nothing short of a bio behavioral ‘moonshot’ program," adds Brian Gladue, HSC executive VP for research and innovation.

The University of North Texas BioDiscovery Institute's $1.4 million grant from the W. M. Keck Foundation is seeding research in sustainable medicine—literally.
“What we're thinking long-term is that if plants can store medicines in seeds, you eat the seeds, and the medicine is already contained. You don't have all these factories, you don't need any chemicals—it's just there and available,” said UNT lead researcher Elizabeth Skellam.

Frisco-based InspectIR received the FDA emergency use authorization on Friday for its breathalyzer test, which tests for organic compounds associated with COVID-19 in a person's breath. According to a study, the tests are more effective than the rapid antigen tests available for free from the U.S. government.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced plans Wednesday to spend $403 million on the final design and build of a 1.5-mile flood-control bypass channel, which will reroute part of the Trinity River near downtown Fort Worth—and create Panther Island.
Fort Worth hopes the 800-acre island will become a massive housing and mixed-use entertainment and recreational district, connecting downtown Fort Worth to the city’s cultural district and the Stockyards.
